The Role of Women in the Spanish-Speaking World

Ser mujer hoy en día es mucho más fácil. Durante la dictadura en España tenían que seguir un papel muy estricto. Ellas tenían que ser la esposa y madre perfecta. Entonces, ellas tenían que cuidar a los hijos, tenían que limpiar la casa, cocinar para toda la familia y muchas más cosas domesticas. Durante la dictadura, las mujeres no podían tener un trabajo y cuando ellas querían viajar, tenían que pedir permiso a sus maridos.
También, ellas no podían tener propiedad; básicamente ellas eran la propiedad de sus maridos porque tampoco podían divorciarse. Pero, hoy en día, después de que terminó la dictadura franquista en España, las mujeres tienen mucha más libertad. Ellas ya pueden salir de sus casas solas, pueden trabajar, no tienen que encontrar un esposo, y tampoco deben tener hijos. También, se ha permitido el divorcio.
Entonces, yo pienso que el mayor cambio en el papel de la mujer es que hoy en día la mujer no tiene un papel específico, sino ella es libre y elije lo que ella quiere hacer. Mucha gente, especialmente hombres, piensen que este cambio tiene inconvenientes. Yo creo que un inconveniente en este cambio es que ahora, si estás divorciado, trabajando y tienes un hijo, no lo vas a poder cuidar, y esto es triste. Porque, casi siempre lo vas a tener que llevarloa tus padres o vas a tener llamar a una niñera para cuidar a tu hijo. Y por todo eso, no vas a poder ver a tu hijo crecer y tampoco pasar mucho tiempo en la familia con él. Pero, esto no es un gran inconveniente puesto que ahora tu hijo va a poder pasar más tiempo con sus abuelos. Para mí, este cambio casi no tiene inconvenientes porque esto podría pasar con una mujer tal cual como con un hombre. Esto es porque los hombres y las mujeres son iguales.
Los cambios de papel experimentados por la mujer española y la argentina se parecen, pero no tanto. En España, hoy en día, las mujeres ya tienen mucha libertad, por ejemplo, en España está permitido el aborto. Pero, por otro lado, en Argentina, las mujerestienen libertad, pero hay mucho machismo entonces hay muchos maridos que obligan a sus esposas a seguir con el papel ‘tradicional’ de una mujer. En Argentina, no es legal tener un aborto como en España. Entonces, yo pienso que, en España, las mujeres tienen más libertad que las mujeres en Argentina.

Nowadays, being a woman is much easier. During Franco’s dictatorship in Spain, women had to follow a very limited role. They had to be the perfect wife and spouse. So, they had to take care of the children, clean the house and cook for the entire family, among many other domestic tasks. During the dictatorship, women could not have a job and, when they wanted to go out, they had to ask their husbands for permission.
Additionally, woman could not hold property; they themselves were basically the property of their husbands, as they also could not divorce. However, following the Democratic Transition period, woman have much more freedom. They can leave their houses alone, they can work, they do not have to find a husband, and they do not need to have children either. Divorce is also permitted.
For me, the greatest change in the role of women is that, nowadays, women no longer have a specific role; they are free and can choose what they want to do. Many people, especially men, think that this change creates inconveniences. I believe that one inconvenience in this change is that now, if you are divorced, working and have a child, you are not going to be able to take care of them, and this is a shame. This is due to the fact that, you will almost always have to take them to your parents or call a nanny. As a result, you are not going to be able to watch your child grow up or spend time with him in the family. However, this is not a significant inconvenience, as now your child can spend more time with their grandparents. In my opinion, this change has almost no inconveniences, because this can happen with both a woman and a man. This is due to the fact that men and women are equal.
The changes to the role of women in Spain are similar to those in Argentina, but not entirely. Nowadays, in Spain, women have a lot of freedom, for example they can have an abortion. But, on the other hand, in Argentina, women have freedom, but there is a lot of Chauvinism, meaning that many husbands force their wives to follow the ‘traditional’ role of the woman. In Argentina, it is not legal to have an abortion as it is in Spain. Therefore, I think that, in Spain, women have more freedom than women in Argentina.
